GMA News' #HindiTama Campaign Slaps Duterte Fans Back to Reality

QUEZON CITY, Philippines - GMA News incurred the anger of President Rodrigo Duterte's fans after slapping their misinformation with hard facts.

The prominent news network introduced the #HindiTama project to combat fake news.

According to their introductory article on the #HindiTama project, one of the pitfalls of social media is the "proliferation of fake news articles and memes, which are then shared and re-shared to bigger audiences" and it has become "a powerful tool for disinformation instead of enlightenment."

"GMA News Online is starting up the #HindiTama project, which aims to put in check some of the viral hoaxes that spread on social media. We believe that whichever part of the political spectrum one falls on, fake news doesn't do anyone any favors, and only serves to undermine the power of social media to enlighten."

Snapped back to reality

Meanwhile, Duterte fans who frequent the comments section of news sites such as GMA News have expressed their ignorance in the face of facts.

"Paano yan? Eh kayo mismo mahilig gumawa ng FAKE na story at palpak na balita, NEGATIVE pa madalas... Magtigil na kayo!! Bibirahin nyo lang mga ayaw nyo at gusto nyo mapunta sa kanila yung atensyon para makapag sinungaling nanaman kayo... YAN ang talagang plano nyo!!" said one of the commenters.

There's no gravity

GMA News has started with clearing the misconceptions of the severity of Typhoons Yolanda and Lawin. The misinforming meme was presented by a prominent De La Salle University professor and Duterte fanboy.

They asked expert help from Japan-based meteorologist Robert Speta who said that Yolanda was a much stronger storm by official records and that it "wasn't even close".

However, a Duterte supporter claimed that GMA News was malicious in their #HindiTama news article.

"Dahil ba konti lang casualties sa duterte admin vs aquino admin? Ano gusto nyo palabasin, dapat maraming casualties? Or simply, YOU'RE SAYING THAT YOUR WEATHER SOURCES ARE VERY UNRELIABLE...WTF," said the commenter.

"bkt b tlga ang hlg nyung mag hnap nang butas mga anti-duterte?
bkt mahrap po bng tanggapn s nyu n wla kyung binatbat sa kasalukuyang admin.?" said another.

Duterte supporters are now branding the news network as "dilawan" and "yellowtard".
